Your RTT Journey: What to Expect from Your Session

If you're considering RTT, you may be wondering what actually happens during a session.

That's one of the questions I'm asked most often.

Perhaps you've never experienced hypnotherapy before. Maybe you're feeling curious, excited, or even a little nervous.

Will you lose control?

What if you can't be hypnotised?

Will you have to relive painful memories?

What actually happens during those three hours?

These are all completely normal questions.

The good news is that an RTT session isn't mysterious or frightening. In fact, most people leave saying it felt far more natural and comfortable than they expected.

This guide will walk you through every stage of your RTT journey so you'll know exactly what to expect—from our first conversation through to your personalised recording and the changes that continue long after the session has ended.

Before your session

Your RTT journey actually begins before we meet.

We'll start with a discovery call, where you can tell me about the challenges you're facing, ask any questions you may have, and decide whether RTT feels like the right approach for you.

If we decide to work together, I'll send you an intake questionnaire to complete before your session.

This isn't simply paperwork.

The questionnaire helps me begin understanding you as a whole person, rather than focusing only on the symptom that's brought you to therapy.

You'll be asked about your current challenges, your goals, your medical history, significant life experiences and your family background.

Many people wonder why I ask about childhood when they are coming to see me for anxiety, confidence, emotional eating or another present-day issue.

The reason is simple.

Many of the beliefs we carry as adults were formed much earlier in life. Understanding your early experiences doesn't mean we're looking to blame parents or revisit the past unnecessarily. Instead, it helps us understand how your subconscious mind learned to protect you and why certain patterns may still be operating today.

We begin by talking

When you arrive for your session, we don't begin with hypnosis straight away.

Instead, we spend time talking.

This part of the session is incredibly important because it allows me to understand not only what you're struggling with but also what you would like your life to look like once that struggle has been resolved.

We'll explore questions such as:

  • What brought you here today?

  • What symptoms are you experiencing?

  • When do they tend to appear?

  • How are they affecting your everyday life?

  • What would you like to feel instead?

We'll also spend time talking about your childhood, your important relationships and any significant life events that may help us understand your story.

One of my favourite questions is:

"If this problem disappeared today, what would your life look like?"

This question helps us move our focus away from the problem and towards the future you want to create.

Your answer also becomes an important part of the personalised recording I create for you after the session.

Understanding hypnosis

Before we begin hypnosis, I'll explain exactly what to expect and answer any remaining questions.

Many people worry about losing control or not being able to wake up.

Fortunately, hypnosis doesn't work like it does in films or stage shows.

Hypnosis is simply a state of deep relaxation and focused attention.

You'll remain aware throughout the session. You'll hear my voice, you'll be able to speak to me, and you'll always remain in control.

If there's ever something you don't want to share, you don't have to. Your subconscious isn't going to reveal secrets against your wishes.

The easiest way to describe it is this:

We'll simply be having a conversation while your eyes are closed and your conscious mind is quieter, allowing your subconscious mind to become more accessible.

Entering hypnosis

Once you're feeling relaxed and comfortable, I'll gently guide you into hypnosis using relaxation and deepening techniques.

Many clients describe it as feeling deeply relaxed while remaining completely aware of what's happening around them.

Some people experience vivid images.

Others remember emotions.

Some simply know things without seeing pictures at all.

Every experience is different, and there is no right or wrong way to experience hypnosis.

Discovering the root cause

This is where the real detective work begins.

Rather than focusing only on today's symptoms, RTT looks for the experiences that first created the beliefs behind those symptoms.

We'll usually explore several significant memories rather than just one.

These memories might come from childhood, adolescence or another meaningful period of your life.

Occasionally, clients revisit very early experiences, including birth or even time spent in the womb.

Sometimes the memories are ones you've always remembered but never fully understood.

Other times, they are memories you haven't thought about for years.

Each one provides another piece of the puzzle.

Together, they begin to reveal the patterns your subconscious has been carrying.

Understanding your story

Finding memories is only part of the process.

Understanding them is where transformation begins.

As we explore these experiences together, you'll begin to recognise connections that may never have been obvious before.

Many clients suddenly realise where beliefs such as:

"I'm not good enough."

"I have to please everyone."

"I'm not safe."

or

"I have to stay in control."

first developed.

These beliefs often made perfect sense at the time.

The problem is that many of them continue running our lives long after they're no longer needed.

Understanding why your subconscious created these patterns is often one of the most powerful moments of the session.

Working with your subconscious

Every RTT session is unique because every person is unique.

Depending on what emerges during your session, we may use a variety of therapeutic approaches to help create change.

This might include helping you understand the positive intention behind a behaviour, exploring the role a symptom has been playing in your life, working with your younger self, or creating healing conversations that bring understanding and emotional resolution.

These techniques aren't about changing your past.

They're about changing the meaning your subconscious has attached to those experiences so that they no longer need to influence your present.

Creating transformation

Once we've understood where the pattern began and why it developed, we move into the transformation stage.

This is where we help your subconscious release outdated beliefs and replace them with healthier, more supportive ones.

Many clients describe this part of the session as feeling lighter, calmer and more hopeful.

It's often the moment where they realise that the beliefs they've carried for years are no longer serving them.

Your personalised recording

After your session, I'll create a personalised hypnosis recording just for you.

This isn't a generic recording used for every client.

It's created specifically from your goals, your story, your language and everything we've discovered together during your session.

Listening to this recording daily for at least 21 days helps reinforce the new beliefs and ways of thinking we've begun creating during our time together.

The session doesn't end when you leave.

This is where much of the ongoing change continues to develop.

Life after your RTT session

Many people notice changes immediately.

Others find those changes happen gradually over the following days and weeks.

You may notice yourself responding differently to situations that would previously have triggered anxiety, fear or self-doubt.

Many clients tell me they simply feel lighter, calmer and more like themselves.

Although one RTT session can be deeply transformative, we are rarely defined by just one issue.

As one layer is resolved, many people choose to continue exploring other areas of their lives in future sessions.

Each session builds on the last, helping you create lasting change across different aspects of your life.

Key takeaways

  • RTT is a collaborative process—you remain aware and in control throughout the session.

  • We explore the root cause of your presenting problem, rather than simply managing the symptoms.

  • The session combines insight, understanding and transformation.

  • Your personalised recording helps reinforce the changes over the following 21 days.

  • Every RTT journey is unique because every person is unique.

Every RTT journey is unique

Every RTT journey is unique because every person is unique.

There is no right or wrong way to experience an RTT session. Some people gain immediate insights, while for others, understanding unfolds more gradually. Every experience is different, and each journey moves at its own pace.

What matters most is not how quickly change happens, but that you begin to understand yourself with greater clarity and compassion. Once you understand why a pattern developed, you are no longer simply trying to manage the symptom—you have the opportunity to create lasting change at its source.

RTT is not something that is done to you. It is a collaborative process.

We work together to uncover the beliefs, experiences and emotional patterns that may have been influencing your life for years. My role is to guide the process, ask thoughtful questions and provide a safe, supportive space for you to discover your own answers.

My hope is that this article has given you a clearer understanding of what to expect from an RTT session and helped remove some of the mystery surrounding the process.

Whether you're simply curious about RTT or considering taking the next step, remember that every journey begins with understanding—and sometimes, that first step can make all the difference.
